The Intermediaries Rules, 2011 (or the IT Rules), represent the worst form of legal regulation which is today threatening online discourse and promoting censorship.
This is not only as per me, civil society organisations, activists, bloggers, research organisations are unanimous on this.
If you are reading this, there is a good chance it will effect you too.
We have an opportunity to ask for its repeal. The IT Rules are slated for discussion in parliament in a few days.
Time is reserved for this discussion.
All we need to do is push our representatives to discuss it.
Pranesh Prakash from CIS has put together five ways which will prompt more discussion and hopefully lead to their repeal. I am pasting them below.
Things You Can Do to Fight Censorship
1. Sign the petition to India’s MPs to scrap the internet censorship law.
2. Call your MP and send him/her an e-mail asking him/her to vote against the Internet censorship law (and for the motion introduced by MP P. Rajeeve).
3. Take a photo of yourself, saying “Don’t Censor Me”, and submit it to theDon’t Censor Me tumblr.
4. Take part in offline protests organized by groups like Save Your Voice (in Delhi), the Free Software Movement of Karnataka (in Bangalore).
5. Come to meetings, such as this one organized by the Foundation for Media Professionals and CIS [Facebook link], to learn more about what you can do.
