Indian Government Approves Blocking of 306 Twitter Accounts Following Assam Clashes

As reported by TOI, review committee set up by the Indian Government has approved the decision to block 306 Twitter accounts after examining 310 accounts linked to communal clashes in Assam’s Kokrajhar district. Some accounts were found to have posted morphed images that could incite communal tension.

Despite meetings with Google, Facebook, and Twitter, these companies did not comply with requests for account details. Twitter reported receiving less than 10 user data requests from the Indian government between July and December 2012, none of which were fulfilled. Google received 2,431 requests from 4,106 accounts during the same period, complying with 66% of them.
