Reports on the creation of NETRA

As reported by the Economic Times, the government is set to launch ‘NETRA,’ an internet surveillance system developed by the Centre for Artificial Intelligence & Robotics (CAIR) under the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO).

‘Netra’ can detect keywords such as ‘attack,’ ‘bomb,’ ‘blast,’ or ‘kill’ across various digital platforms and capture dubious voice traffic on software like Skype or Google Talk. Tested by the Intelligence Bureau and Cabinet Secretariat, it will be used by all national security agencies.

In order to expedite the deployment, the Home Ministry has approached the DRDO to allocate more resources to CAIR. The inter-ministerial group has also discussed strategies for internet tracking, computer security, and storage allocation for intercepted data, aiming to establish a national internet scanning and coordination center.
