The Kerala Department of Panchayats will implement GPS-based Unique Property Identification Numbers (UPIN) for all buildings in panchayat areas, expanding to municipal and corporation areas later, as reported by The Hindu.
Starting with 941 panchayats, this initiative aims to replace the current system, which issues tags with house numbers that change every five years. The new 10-digit numbers will provide a permanent digital identity, aiding in various online transactions like passport applications. However, privacy concerns arise as it remains unclear how accessible the information will be or how it will tie to personal identities.
