IT Minister states no plan to regulate social media

In response to concerns raised by the Opposition on the misuse of social media for spreading fake news that have led to increasing incidents of violence and lynching, IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad stated in the Rajya Sabha that the government has no plans to regulate social media content and emphasized that platforms must abide by the law. He reiterated the Centre’s commitment to free speech and privacy while urging social media companies to exercise due diligence and prevent their platforms from being used for criminal activities. The opposition criticized the government’s inaction against its own members supporting mob lynching culprits and stressed the need to curb fake news to maintain communal harmony.
