India has joined the Five Eyes alliance (comprising the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) along with Japan in calling on big tech companies to create backdoors for law enforcement to access end-to-end encrypted communications. They argue that encryption prevents authorities from addressing serious crimes and national security issues.
The seven governments emphasized that encryption backdoors should apply not only to messaging apps but also to device encryption and integrated platforms, enabling companies to tackle illegal content such as child exploitation and terrorism. While recognizing the importance of encryption for privacy and cybersecurity, they stress that it should not impede law enforcement’s ability to act against serious illegal activities.
