Government Issues Advisory to Social Media Intermediaries on Misinformation and Deepfakes

The Union Government has issued an advisory to significant social media intermediaries, emphasizing the need to identify and promptly remove misinformation and deepfakes. Platforms are required to exercise due diligence and make reasonable efforts to detect such content, ensuring compliance with the IT Rules 2021 timeframes. Reported content must be removed within 36 hours. Non-compliance may result in the loss of protections under Section 79(1) of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
