MEITY to release draft DPDP rules for public consultation after Budget session
As reported by CNBC, MeitY is set to release draft rules for the Data Protection and Privacy (DPDP) Act for public consultation immediately following the Budget session of Parliament. There will be a 30-45-day window for public feedback on the draft rules.

As reported by the Economic Times, the government has finalized the draft rules for the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act 2023 and plans to release them for public consultation in the second or third week of August 2024.
Nigeria FCCPC fines Meta $220 million for violating data laws
Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) fined Meta Platforms $220 million for violating local data protection and privacy laws. The investigation, spanning 38 months and conducted alongside the Data Protection Commission, found that Meta collected and shared Nigerian users’ data without consent and imposed exploitative privacy policies.

Notification of the Telecom Act, 2023
Specific provisions of the Telecom Act, 2023 have been notified by the Union Government to take effect from June 26, 2024 as per a gazette notification dated June 21, 2024. The Gazette notification states, “The Central government hereby appoints the 26th day of June 2024, as the date on which the provisions of sections 1, 2, 10 to 30, 42 to 44, 46, 47, 50 to 58, 61, and 62 of the said Act shall come into force.”

Concerns over the draft Digital Competition Bill 2024
India Inc. raised concerns over the draft Digital Competition Bill 2024 during a meeting chaired by MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan, which also included representatives from the Competition Commission of India and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, as reported by the Hindu. The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) was also involved and criticized the bill for its broad definition of significant digital players, which encompasses both large and small firms, and argued that existing issues could be addressed through amendments to the IT and Competition Acts.
