Notification of the Telecom Act, 2023

Specific provisions of the Telecom Act, 2023 have been notified by the Union Government to take effect from June 26, 2024 as per a gazette notification dated June 21, 2024. The Gazette notification states, “The Central government hereby appoints the 26th day of June 2024, as the date on which the provisions of sections 1, 2, 10 to 30, 42 to 44, 46, 47, 50 to 58, 61, and 62 of the said Act shall come into force.”

Concerns over the draft Digital Competition Bill 2024

India Inc. raised concerns over the draft Digital Competition Bill 2024 during a meeting chaired by MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan, which also included representatives from the Competition Commission of India and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, as reported by the Hindu. The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) was also involved and criticized the bill for its broad definition of significant digital players, which encompasses both large and small firms, and argued that existing issues could be addressed through amendments to the IT and Competition Acts.

Press Bodies passes resolution against laws aimed at curbing freedom of press

Top press bodies in India have resolved to intensify demands for the Union government to withdraw laws they claim curb press freedom. They specifically oppose the proposed Broadcast Services (Regulation) Bill, 2023; the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023; the Press and Registration of Periodicals Act, 2023; and the Information Technology Amendment Rules, 2023.
